There has been significant growth around the Metaverse over the past year, and it’s our job as marketers to understand why and how to use it. Parts of the Metaverse are here now, but there is still so much more to come. It’s a work in progress, and the full vision of the Metaverse may take 10 years to achieve. Let’s discuss four things we’ve learned so far:
1. It’s under construction, making it difficult to define.
Meta has defined the Metaverse as “a set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who aren’t in the same physical space as you.” Meta wants us to think of it as less of a platform and more of a place we want to inhabit. It’s constantly evolving, and one thing the future will bring is more clarity around the defining attributes of the Metaverse.
2. It’s about connecting with people.
The Metaverse makes staying in touch intentionally with family and friends easier, no matter where you are. Human connection takes a front seat more so now than ever, and consumers are craving this connection with brands as well. People want relationships and experiences with brands that are more than just transactional. Meta believes that their new technology will serve as a bridge between online and offline worlds.
3. It will be made by all of us.
Building the Metaverse is a collective project, going beyond one single company. Meta is working with partners across the world and investing in global research. Meta also promises inclusion and accessibility for everyone.
4. It could transform the nature of shopping.
Augmented reality creates an opportunity for hybrid experiences that are transforming the very nature of shopping. It is predicted that many organizations will offer products or services for the Metaverse in the future. Meta believes it could get rid of the customer journey altogether, saying that people just want their stuff, and they increasingly want it as soon as possible.
